Sometimes I think DJ's are tuned into our collective unconscious, for today of all days - is not easy: will I finish my thesis? will I get a job? will we be able to pay October's mortgage? And as with most songs Tull, they have a way of making me feel a little better, bringing me out of Greg Brown's Just a Bum from an hour or so ago.
What an odd, quirky, amusing, and lovable tune. I particulaly like the typewriter in the background. Now there's nostalgia for you! Some of the noises remind me of Cousin It - appropriate for the Halloween season.
I heard this guy last night ... this song in fact ... and it's infectious. It'll be interesting how I feel after another week of listening. He kindof has a Nick Drake / David Grey / .... something else. Quite Likable.
I don't think I would have ever heard this song if it wern't for Radio Paradise.Thank you for this gift. The lyrics really took my by surprise! Someone below wrote that it is an anthem for the abused. I agree, a powerful song that places you into the mind of the victim (also said below, I think).
I wonder how younger listeners today respond to it? Would some of them in similar situations use it to justify their situation ... or their actions?
Watch it with the video! - I find it very meditative, even the shrill voice of the female singer in counterpoint to Stipe, whose velvety voice does indeed make me dream.
Agreed, this one can play over and over again. So good, so good!
