I still haven't figured out if the alleged 'genius' of Morricone (or Sergio Leone, for that matter) is authentic or a tongue-in-cheek fabrication by a clique of East Village hipsters that just caught on somehow. I tend to suspect the latter. Either way, this isn't music made for listening. It's the backdrop for a visual narrative and cannot stand on its own. Pleeeease stop playing it, Bill!
Reading through some of the old comments about voice being suited to material, I finally realize who DP has always reminded me of: Bryan Ferry back in the late Roxy days, perhaps without benefit of Brian Eno, and smoothed out a little too much, but not quite into the crooner excesses — which I liked, actually — of Ferry's solo work.
