Kíla & Oki
Kíla is an Irish folk music group formed in 1987 in Irish language secondary school Coláiste Eóin in County Dublin. Kíla fuse the effects of their own melodies and Irish (Gaelic) lyrics, Irish folk instruments such as whistles, fiddles, Uilleann pipes, bones and bodhrán with djembe, congas, drums, mandolins, brass, and acoustic/electric/ bass guitars. Kíla’s eight members come from the differing musical backgrounds of traditional, classical, and rock.
Oki Kano, known professionally as OKI, is a Japanese musician of mixed Japanese Ainu ancestry. Oki plays the tonkori, an Ainu stringed instrument, mixing traditional Ainu music with reggae, dub and other styles of world music. He also plays guitar and traditional Ainu percussion instruments.Kíla and Oki collaborated on the 2006 album Kíla & Oki. Both Kila and Oki are influenced by local traditional styles, and the (mostly) acoustic Irish blend of dulcimer, banjo, whistle and pipes is set against the distinctively eastern sound of Oki's sturdy vocals and the tonkori. The results range from elegant, gently drifting and evocative instrumental work through to upbeat songs such as the rousing "Ni Liom Fein", in which Irish dance is accompanied by the Ainu jaws harp, or the final "Last Mile Home", in which a sturdy, bluesy ballad develops into a rousing celebration.
