I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me
But let me get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud
I'm too alone to be proud
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
To be me
People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream
So let's get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
To be me
My old man was born to rock
He's still trying to beat the clock
Think of me what you will
I've got a little space to fill
So let's get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No you don't know how it feels
To be me
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No you don't know how it feels
To be me

Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was the leader of the rock bands Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch and a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. He was also a successful solo artist.
Over the course of his career, Petty sold more than 80 million albums. His hit singles with the Heartbreakers include "American Girl" (1976), "Don't Do Me Like That" (1979), "Refugee" (1980), "The Waiting" (1981), "Don't Come Around Here No More" (1985) and "Learning to Fly" (1991). Petty's solo hits include "I Won't Back Down" (1989), "Free Fallin'" (1989), and "You Don't Know How It Feels" (1994).
Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year in February 2017 for his contributions to music and for his philanthropy. He also acted; he had a recurring role as the voice of Lucky Kleinschmidt in the animated comedy series King of the Hill from 2004 to the show's end in 2009.
Petty died of an accidental drug overdose in 2017 at the age of 66, one week after the end of the Heartbreakers' 40th Anniversary Tour.
Absolutely — absolutely — wrong.
You really missed the mark here. His first 2-3 albums were so unusual that he was often lumped in with punk and new wave. But the first-class talent of the band as a whole repeatedly showed them to be trailblazingly original (as far as rock bands go, anyway) and allowed him to explore different sounds many times over his long career. Yeah, we can look back and see "classic rock" as far as the eye can see, but that's only because everything he did was incorporated into the canon.
One of my anthems during the dark days of divorce, often sung to my little dog, Miss Pallas Athena. as we readied for an overnight backpacking trip.
That was long ago and now, emotionally, far away. (Thank goodness.)
"Wait, what was I saying? . . . . . Are those cheezies?"
You are entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it is.
Absolutely — absolutely — wrong.
A little petty if you ask me
Uplifting indeed. That is one of the overall endearing components of his music in general. I generally feel better after having listened to a Petty song than before it started.
Funny how I ended up with more physical Petty music than most anyone else in my collection. I don't listen to Petty regularly often enough though. It's more of a binge listening mood when I do. :)
Out on a weekend ....
I'm old enough to remember when radio broadcasters censored the word "joint" when they played this song.
I remember him winning an award for this song, possibly from MTV, and in his acceptance speech he thanked MTV for playing his song, but complained that he never could hear one word in the song
Maybe we'll get some more of the Wilbury clan...

While FM radio is not something I listen to anymore, I can say this song has been featured on KZOK 102.5 FM in Seattle for ages on April 20th, during the "drive at five" listener requests. Sounds much better via FLAC stream provided by BillG...Long Live RP!! RIP TP.
