Massive Attack

Massive Attack are an English trip hop collective formed in 1988 in Bristol by Robert "3D" Del Naja, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall.

The debut Massive Attack album, Blue Lines, was released in 1991. The single "Unfinished Sympathy" reached the charts and was later voted the 63rd-greatest song of all time in a poll by NME. 1998's Mezzanine (containing the top 10 single "Teardrop") and 2003's 100th Window reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. Both Blue Lines and Mezzanine feature in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Massive Attack's awards include a Brit Award for Best British Dance Act, two MTV Europe Music Awards, and two Q Awards. They have released five studio albums that have sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Massive Attack support some political, human rights and environmental causes.

I still remember the ripples that went through my musical world in the mid 90s when Portishead and Massive Attack brought their delicious grit and grime into play and turned my tastes in electronica and aetherea from bands like Tangerine Dream and Cocteau Twins in the direction of what would become TripHop, DnB etc. Still sublime decades later.

Not only is she the Vocalist, she also wrote the lyrics!

Both albums, "Mezzanine" and "Protection" that came before it, are bonafide classics and very influential. Bless!

I was such a music snob for so many years. Only listened to prog bands forever. 
Then in 2006 I found Radio Paradise, who taught me the joys of Massive Attack, Dead Can Dance, Portishead, AfroCelt and so many more. What a fool I was. So grateful for this station. This is why I donate every month. Thank you, RP!

I took my 18-year old son to the 25th Anniversary show of Mezzanine in San Francisco, and across the 35 years that separate us, we both felt it was the best show we had seen & heard. They played the entirety of the album, plus enough of Protection and Blue Lines to captivate us for more than 2.5 hours without a break. I hope to see them again.

Here's a great article about how the song became a "hit" in the US, but only as far as the House MD show.  MA was never as popular in the US as elsewhere.  They made the deal for House, MD to use the song, but were paid virtually nothing for it.  The reasoning by the band was that it would help them break into the US market.  However, that didn't happen, either.

The article talks about how Jeff Buckley was the inspiration for the singer, Elizabeth Fraisier, who was chosen after the band voted to ditch Madonna:  The Truth About The House, M.D. Theme Song   Incidentally and oddly, there's no mention about, or crediting MA with the "House, MD theme song" on Wikipedia's page about Massive Attack.  Although they are a "Massive hit" in the UK, not so much in the US.

I voted it a 9 -- since I always loved House, as well as the opening theme song, even if only the first 20 seconds.
