With the liquor and drugs
And the flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease.
Hey man, where'd ya get that lotion?
I've been hurting since I've bought the gimmick
About something called love
Yeah, something called love.
Well, that's like hypnotizing chickens.
Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in the ear before.
I have a lust for life
'cause of a lust for life.
I'm worth a million in prizes
With my torture film
Drive a gto
Wear a uniform
All on a government loan.
I'm worth a million in prizes
Yeah, I'm through with sleeping on the sidewalk
No more beating my brains
No more beating my brains
With liquor and drugs
With liquor and drugs.
Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in my ear before
Well, I've a lust for life (lust for life)
'cause of a lust for life (lust for life, oooo)
I got a lust for life (oooo)
Got a lust for life (oooo)
Oh, a lust for life (oooo)
Oh, a lust for life (oooo)
A lust for life (oooo)
I got a lust for life (oooo)
Got a lust for life.
Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in my ear before
Well, I've a lust for life
'cause I've a lust for life.
Here comes johnny yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And the flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease.
Hey man, where'd ya get that lotion?
Your skin starts itching once you buy the gimmick
About something called love
Love, love, love
Well, that's like hypnotizing chickens.
Well, I'm just a modern guy
Of course, I've had it in the ear before
And I've a lust for life (lust for life)
'cause I've a lust for life (lust for life)
Got a lust for life

Lust for life
Lust for life

James Newell Osterberg (born April 21, 1947), known professionally as Iggy Pop, is an American singer, musician, songwriter, actor, and radio broadcaster. He was the vocalist and lyricist of proto-punk band The Stooges, who were formed in 1967 and have disbanded and reunited many times since. Often called the "Godfather of Punk", he was named one of the 50 Great Voices by NPR. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Stooges. Pop also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, for his solo work.
Initially playing a raw, primitive style of rock and roll (progressing later towards more experimental and aggressive rock), the Stooges sold few records in their original incarnation and gained a reputation for their confrontational performances, which often involved acts of self-mutilation by Pop. He had a long collaborative relationship and friendship with David Bowie over the course of his career, beginning with the Stooges' album Raw Power in 1973. Both musicians went to West Berlin to wean themselves off their respective drug addictions and Pop began his solo career by collaborating with Bowie on the 1977 albums The Idiot and Lust for Life, Pop usually contributing the lyrics. Throughout his career, he is well known for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics, poetic lyrics and distinctive voice. He was one of the first performers to do a stage-dive and popularized the activity. Pop, who traditionally (but not exclusively) performs bare-chested, also performed such stage theatrics as rolling around in broken glass and exposing himself to the crowd.
Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, including garage rock, punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, art rock, new wave, grunge, jazz, blues and electronic. Though his popularity has fluctuated, many of Pop's songs have become well known, including "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" by the Stooges, and his solo hits "Lust for Life", "The Passenger" and "Real Wild Child (Wild One)". In 1990, he recorded his only Top 40 U.S. hit, "Candy", a duet with B-52's singer Kate Pierson. Pop's song "China Girl" became more widely known when it was re-recorded by co-writer Bowie, who released it as the second single from his most commercially successful album, Let's Dance (1983). Bowie re-recorded and performed many of Pop's songs throughout his career.
Although Pop has had limited commercial success, he has remained a culture icon and a significant influence on a wide range of musicians in numerous genres. The Stooges' album Raw Power has proved an influence on artists such as Sex Pistols, the Smiths, and Nirvana. His solo album The Idiot has been cited as a major influence on a number of post-punk, electronic and industrial artists including Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Joy Division, and was described by Siouxsie Sioux as a "re-affirmation that our suspicions were true: the man is a genius."
Yea, he fulfilled that promise with his new wife:
Well,
I'm just a modern guy
When James Newell Ostenberg, Jr. was not a modern guy...
Iggy got onstage with his minimalist band (drums, bass) and as he launched into the opening tune the power was apparently intentionally cut in the building and the emergency lighting came on. Iggy was unfazed, said FU and continued to play acapella until the fire department and the police forced him off stage to loud boos. The crowd refused to leave and a skirmish ensued with Iggy leading the charge. UC Berkeley publicly apologized the next day.
Quite the gig.
Life for some may have a been a Johnny Mathis song or a JohnPaulGeorgeRingo jingo, but that seemed like a load of horse _ _ _ _ to others. If you don't "get" the music I'd say you fall under the former category and not so much the latter.
The seeds of punk (Velvet Underground, Stooges, MC5, NY Dolls) were really a response to the overproduced prog rock, stadium rock, and the big money that was flowing into music. Basically a big FU, I'm going to do what I want. This in turn inspired the Brit scene (Sex Pistols, et al) who used to vent their frustrations about Thatcher's Great Britain and utter lack of opportunity in the depressed economy. That was parallel to the Ramones and CBGB scene in NY which eventually had a parallel scene in Los Angeles with X, Blasters, and so many more. All of that splintered into the hard core scene and "new wave" (as labelled by the media) and latter into industrial, speed/death metal, electronica, and a host of other subgenres.
The late 70s to late 80s was probably the most diverse the music industry has ever been however, aside from MTV, most people in American never heard any of it.

These guys could've been brothers.

My 6 pack abs are Budweiser.
Went to the Iggy Pop gig at the student union building on the UC Berkeley campus back a ways when I was living in Berkeley circa the tear gas days surrounding the legendary peoples park conflict.

Cool story. Thank You for sharing it!
I'd like to see him and Tom Jones do a duet of this.
Me TOO!! The Tom Jones cover is on the RP playlist. I love it!
We need to think about the ecological choices we make and think about what kind of planet we're leaving for Iggy and Keith Richards
Too Funny! These guys are like the Energizer Bunny! They just keep on going!!!
This track provides us with probably the most enjoyable yet ironic start to any movie.
