Radio Citizen was founded in the early 2000’s by Berlin composer and music producer Niko Schabel. Schabel, in addition to the sampler and mixing desk, plays clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, piano, flute, and the synthesizer. He is often accompanied by musicians from Berlin and Munich, including the poet and singer Bajka Pluwatsch, a frequent collaborator who provided the vocals for the tracks “Summer Days”, “The Hop”, and many others.
Schabel said he chose the name Radio Citizen because it allowed for a wide range of musical connotations, which fits the highly diverse nature of the music they play. Their sound combines elements of blues, smooth jazz, funk, hip hop, and folk music that makes for an intriguing concoction.
