Still I was a slave, waiting to be saved
Dream, the body sleeps but I
Am not too proud to roam
On the back streets
It's oh, so simple when you know
You'll know this when it's time to go
Stray, and soon you'll leave behind
The loneliness you've sown, paradise leans
Scream, the body leaves the bone
To sit upon the throne
The battle waged for light
Dream, dream your sins away
Sin your dreams away
You're holding back, stop holding back
Unchain!
Say you'll love me tonight
Save your love for me tonight
And I feel you now
Lie awake and love drunk
I feel you now
Heavenly daemons outside my window
Sent here to see me outside this world
I call the shadow, you call the season
And that's solitary

The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. They were active from 1986 to 2001 and have since reformed as a band. The group – with core members Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), and John Curley (bass) – rose up around the grunge movement, evolving from a garage band in the vein of the Replacements to incorporate more R&B and soul influences into their sound and image. After releasing their first album independently in 1988, the band signed to the Seattle-based label Sub Pop. They released their major-label debut and fourth album, Gentlemen, in 1993. Pitchfork described them as "one of the few alt-bands to flourish on a major label" in the 1990s.
Dulli frequently claimed in interviews that the band would never get back together following their dissolution in 2001; however the group reunited in 2012.
This continues to improve with more listening.
Nice arrangement, mellow, yet simultaneously tense - I really like this.
Coldplay - "Warning Sign". Radiohead - "Lotus Flower". The Afghan Whigs - "Algiers".
And the winner is...?
Barry Gibb.
10
yes.
Most seamless segue ever!!! Diafana Krina to this. Actually had to look to see if really had changed
We need a score button for the RP Mastery level as well...
Great tune, and I'm really glad to have the Whigs back for new music — I never thought it would happen. The Whigs and Catherine Wheel are the most criminally overlooked bands of the '90s.
Saw them live in Portland several months ago -- they absolutely rocked -- very tight playing & performance. Yes -- though they brought it on themselves to a large degree -- are very underrated.
Love this song! Glad to hear some Greg Dulli magic on RP. Could you also play some of their older tunes? Especially ones from Gentlemen and Black Love.
yes, please!
I don't remember exactly what year that was (2014 - 2017). It was at the Haldern Pop Festival in Germany. The final two bands on Saturday's main stage were first The Afghan Whigs and then finally Wilco. The Afghan Whigs played a bombast rock during their performance that blew everything away. Wilco then had a difficult time as their performance was a bit quieter. Hundreds of people left the stage area during what I thought was a very good Wilco performance. I couldn't/won't understand that. But I stood near the stage at Wilco and enjoyed the concert. All in all it wasn't a good idea for the organizers to let Wilco play after the Afghan Whigs. But I saw two really good performances. The Afghan Whigs were also playing this song now.
