Nice new addition to the RP repertoire. Anyone know what the rest of the album is like?
if you are a fan of elbow, you will probably enjoy it very much. it is less "accessible" than SSK or BARB, but no less poetic or musically engaging. I would recommend it highly if you're interested in the band ... and in that context, i would give it an 8.5
"good morning mister magpie, how are we today?" ... how i do like this song. thanks bill. i bought the album the other day, i find myself really drawn to this, lotus flower and codex. simply put, i love radio head, but when thom's vocal melody drives a song, i love them even more. glad they are still at it.
i agree with the thought that this entire effort (album) is better than the last one or two... and upon subsequent listens, i'm enjoying it a little more. it's a bit of a paradigm shift to think 'suprise! new u2 record today'.. i also want to say it's a bit weird to hear bono scream / singing 'Raised By Wolves!', but that's another song...
Guy Garvey has a similar (hoarse) singing style, but musically, Elbow's music doesn't sound very much like Mr. Gabriel's, to me.
Guy Garvey has spent some time writing at Real World Studios ( owned by Gabriel ). Elbow has covered "Mercy Street" by Peter Gabriel and Peter Gabriel has covered Elbow's "Mirrorball".
a magnificent album, this is. in case you don't know, Peter Gabriel covered Elbow's "Mirrorball", and Elbow covered Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street". The video for Elbow's "Fly Boy Blue/ Lunette" was filmed at Realworld ( Peter's ) studio.
...and one of the best live bands going. purely wow. fedtho wrote:
I'll subscribe to that. Well, kind of. I've bought the album (Seldom seen kid), and it makes for a pretty glorious listening-through experience! So we hear all kinds of influences in there, big deal. It flows, it *still* sounds like nothing else I've heard the way it is. (I have to remind myself now and again that this is NOT Peter Gabriel.... the smoky quality of the voice is so incredibly close ...but the music helps, it's nothing like Gabriel has ever done )
this absolutely has to be a tribute, you can't come this close to sounding like echo by accident... the influence and respect for echo in the UK is much more than with North American Bands...
also, i like TAM quite a bit, have for some time, and quite happy with the way their sound is 'maturing' ... the song "library pictures" points to the TAM's older style, but pretty much every other song on this cd has a different tone to it than previous works, although '505' was a bit of a step off for them too.
Listen to "All My Own Stunts" and "Brick By Brick" if you get a chance!

Yes, you nailed it... this has got that 1980's sound to it for sure... and it does sound a lot like Echo and the Bunnymen, which makes it soooo good for the ears... love this song... we be dancing...
i have been listening to Kings of Leon since the 'beginning' , and i must say that this is probably their best offering to date ( to my sensibilities anyway....) and i mean the entire album, not just this single.
