I've upgraded this from 8 to 9, especially in light of the fact that it came right after "Soldier Jane" by Beck.  It's a pretty powerful set of songs. May all wars end in our lifetime (which, in my case, better be in the next five years.{#Daisy}

Cynaera AKA Ann Step Lucus is a ghost around these parts. I always see her posts on songs. She would move on to the next world within a year of this post. She passed on February 6, 2012 of a subdural hematoma, and was 55 years old. I never knew her, but wanted to elevate her spirit, as it seemed she had a kind one.

That is Cynaera's final comment on Radio Paradise.

Rest in peace Ann, the Radio Paradise community sorely misses you.

And to think 14 days later she became ill, and passed shortly thereafter. 55 years young.

Just goes to show, anytime can be your time to go. Hug tighter those that mean something to you.

Comfortably Dumb. One thing ya gotta give the ponderous, bombastic, plodding dullards over at Corporation Floyd, they sure knew their audience.

You sound like a pretentious asshole. Feel free to hate all you like, but a sold 9 in Radio Paradise land is a pretty solid rating IMHO.

So, is it the familiarity that people score this so high or is it actually a good piece of music? Hmmmmm.

Probably because it's an iconic tune.

If it wasn't for Bill's "....Large and squishy soft spot for genre bending covers" (his words), Radio Paradise would be just another music streaming site.

Personally, I'm appreciative for it.

The target for Dire Straights seems to be 6 out of 10, and they are consistent at hitting that mark like an expert dart thrower trying to play down.
I have never heard a transcendent Dire Straights song.
Just another one.
Check if whether your love for them comes from when you were in your early teens and you have fond memories, or whether the music is inventive and good.

You seem to be spiteful in your song ratings just to lower their rankings. Checked out a small selection of your song rating, and you've rated all of the songs below as a 1, and there's plenty more 1 rating you've assigned to songs. Considering the rather high rating the RP community has given these songs, I find it hard to believe these are truly worth a rating of 1 unless you're purposefully trying to spike the ranking.

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane - Your rating = 1 Avg = 8.6
Heroes - David Bowie - Your rating = 1 Avg = 8.5
Papa Was a Rolling Stone - The Temptations - Your rating = 1 Avg = 8.4
No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marle - Your rating = 1 Avg = 8.2
Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Your rating = 1 Avg = 8.3
Turn Me On - Norah Jones - Your rating = 1 Avg = 7.6

Certainly 200 years too late for me....

They posted this 9 years ago... They're knocking on 50 now if they're still alive and kicking. Man how time fly's by.

Interesting factoid. Bill just mentioned that on 9/11 after the 2nd Tower fell, he didn't know what to play, so he looped this song 12 times in a row. How cathartic.

Cover after cover after cover on RP

You say that as if it's a bad thing. Many of these covers I'd never get to hear wo RP.

Just bumped this from a 8  —> 9. For the melody, and for the lyrics.

The saddest song ever...  I agree...  But beautiful just the same.

After actually paying attention to the lyrics, I'd argue Carly Simon's "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" is right up there too.

Lyrics alone are worth at least an 8.

Love the song, but I'm not sure what he's trying so say.

A few people have taken a swing at it here. Pretty deep stuff (like most of what RP plays, and what make RP great Thx Bill).

Edit: It apparently is a song about everything according to Gregory in this BING Lounge session (sadly missing the banjo though).

Merchant voice doesn't grind me like it does for some.

I really digg the rythm of the bass and drums. It's kind of looping along, along with Erik Della Penna tickling of the banjo.

One of the few Metallica songs I can tolerate these days- especially after their Napster/MP3 lawsuit thing.

Funny how that whole thing played out over time.

"...When Ulrich looked back on the entire Napster lawsuit in a 2014 Reddit AMA, he had few regrets. “I wish we had been better prepared for the s— storm that we found ourselves in,” he wrote. “I don’t regret taking on Napster, but I do find it odd how big of a part of our legacy it has become to so many people, because to me it’s more like a footnote.” However, he was still clarifying misconceptions about why Metallica filed the lawsuit, and what they hoped to accomplish."
