Covers will always be judged against the original and unfortunately, for me, this one falls way short. It was saved from the Skip button only because the original is just soooo goood. A great voice but the wrong song, in my humble opinion.
Feels a bit like Nana Mouskouri singing Amy Winehouse.
Agree with the rehash comments. This sounds so much like some of his other stuff only worse. His latest music just doesn't seem fresh anymore. It doesn't have that close-eyes-and-listen effect like so many of his earlier works did.
According to wikipedia the source of the song has a less personal and more practical (contrived?) origin than we might think:
"I Grieve" was conceived after Gabriel looked over his catalogue of music as if it were a catalogue of emotional tools. He found one major missing tool to be one to cope with death and therefore "I Grieve" was born (first aired in 1998, despite the popular belief that it was written in response to 9/11)." (click here)
There's two of Gabriel's songs that make me stop and stare into the middle distance, lost in thought and emotion. This is one of them. The other is "Don't give up". Both of these are astonishingly beautiful to me.
For me PG sounds like overbloated stream of consciousness crap. I used to really like his stuff but I've now crossed him off my christmas list. Ugh....
Does anyone else get a Cat Stevens vibe from this song? The lyrics are a bit simplistic but the vocals and arrangement make me think Paolo is channeling (or trying to channel) the Cat.
His voice reminds me more of Burl Ives but I get the Cat Stevens connection.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This one had me reach (or actually "wretch") for the mute button.
Having heard Sandy Denny's version though, I can only say "this is awful".

Whatever. Still a great song though.
Top marks for great song though!
For me this later stuff (especially this album) is pretty much consistently "sucko-barfo". Instant mute button.
