Really don't like this - Looked her up and saw her father is a dot.com millionaire - Daddy bought his little girl the best producers and publicists and that probably explains why the music sits so badly with me.. but a lot of people I know enjoy this so she's clearly doing something right!
I prefer to judge the music on its own merit, rather than delving into the personal backgrounds of the artists. There usually be dragons when you start digging (see Beck).
I really liked this song, a lot, but the more I listen to it the more it reeks of male privilege and assumption and superiority. So I'm finding it hard to... keep on liking it so much. Pity.
Seriously? You get that from some obscure lyrics that only the author really understands? I wouldn't be so quick to take offence until you're sure you're right.
Not sure how much to trust Wikipedia, but sad to hear that Michael Franti's biological mother put him up for adoption because she was afraid her racist family would not accept him. Don't know the whole story of course, but that sounds like a case of cutting ties with your family if ever I heard one.
People who don't 'get' the Beach Boys should not beat themselves up about it. If there is anything to 'get', it's the complex arpeggios and harmonies not usually found in a pop songs that they created. Other than that, it's just a matter of whether you like the music or not. There never will be 100% universal agreement on music. It's what makes us so interesting I guess...
...unless you disagree with me, and then you're just plain wrong.
I actually sympathized with The Stranglers when they claimed this plagiarized the melody of Duchess. I can see how they lost the lawsuit, but I could sympathize. Note for note it's almost identical, although the overall song is very different.
While we're waiting for a badly-needed new album from these guys, check out the solo project of Josh Onstott. They're called New Mystics and there are 3-4 amazing tracks on the newly released album.
King Creosote, aka Kenny Anderson, has two brothers, one of which is Gordon Anderson, formerly of The Beta Band and now part of The Aliens. Well worth checking out any project associated with these guys.
Alice in Chains were definitely my favourite band of the time. While Pearl Jam and Nirvana were liked by those who didn't even call themselves grunge enthusiasts, AIC stayed more on the edges and you could hear it in their music. Layne Staley's voice was brilliant and the perfect complement to Jerry's songwriting. Stone Temple Pilots and Tool were two of my other favourites. Although I'm still hugely passionate about music, I can't think of an era where I was more obsessed than those grunge-filled nineties...

LOL. I remember an album review where the writer said, "If you're thinking about purchasing this LP, relax, don't do it."
Such an obvious joke, but a good one nonetheless.
He's blind in one eye, hardly makes him "spooky".
Spot on! Not sure if it's an artistic decision, but to me it's just out of tune.
Agree! Even better live
Wonderfully complex with the choral voices near the end.
"The eyes are always watching you....." Nice segue from Gotye's "Don't Worry We'll Be Watching You"
Musica? Do you mean Muzak?
WOT?
I'm guessing it's a reference to Game of Thrones.
I'll buy that. I dig the VAST comparison too. "Loneliness is fine..."
+1 for the VAST comparison
and maybe a bit of AIC too.
Au contraire, the album is excellent. Keep playing it Bill, don't listen to the haters.
