Sun Kil Moon
Sun Kil Moon is an American folk rock act from San Francisco, California, founded in 2002. Initially a continuation of the defunct indie rock band Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon is now the primary recording moniker of vocalist and guitarist Mark Kozelek. The project is named after the Korean super flyweight boxer Sung-Kil Moon.
Following the delayed release of Red House Painters' final studio album, Old Ramon (2001), vocalist and guitarist Kozelek began recording new material under the name Sun Kil Moon with bandmates Anthony Koutsos (drums) and Jerry Vessel (bass), alongside Geoff Stanfield and Tim Mooney. The resulting album, Ghosts of the Great Highway, was released in 2003 to critical acclaim. The project's second studio album, Tiny Cities (2005), was composed entirely of Modest Mouse cover songs.
In 2008, the band released its third studio album, April. Recorded as a three-piece by Kozelek, Koutsos and Stanfield, the album was well received and featured guest vocal appearances from noted indie rock musicians Will Oldham and Ben Gibbard.
Inspired by classical guitar music, Kozelek recorded Sun Kil Moon's fourth studio album, Admiral Fell Promises (2010), as a solo act, and continued to record mostly alone on its follow-up, Among the Leaves (2012). In 2013, Kozelek released three studio albums under his own name before releasing Sun Kil Moon's sixth studio album, Benji, in February 2014, to widespread critical acclaim and increased exposure, with the band releasing their seventh studio effort, Universal Themes, in 2015. Sun Kil Moon's eighth studio album, Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood, was released in February 2017, which was followed by their ninth studio album, This Is My Dinner, in November 2018. The tenth Sun Kil Moon studio album, I Also Want to Die in New Orleans, was released in March 2019.

Reminds me quite a bit of Toad the Wet Sprocket. I like it. Very calming and relaxing. I give it a 6. I'd give it more, but it's just too darn long.

OK, maybe one more thing. Someone referenced this as "shoegazer" type music, with no theatre. While I can agree to a point, it's irrelevant to how a song hits your heart. The melancholy doesn't find it's way to you with jazz hands, it creeps into you.

If the song name at top is the one I am listening to--which is not always the case--I have to vote against the monotony and repetetiveness of it . . . relieved only by the shift from a whiny adult male vocal into an unlovely falsetto. I think I am commenting on the right song, though, because I recall liking the Solas selection that apparently preceded. If someone else enjoys this, good!

OK, I'm talking about the theatrical component in music here. Nothing is more important. A clear dividing line separates musicians capable of theatre & those capable of simply playing. It is the division between genius & mediocrity. On one side we have pasty, uninterested, uninspiring dirty-jean bands we see on Leno, who totally lack theatre in their music & performance. On the other side are the bands we all remember….
Ozzy was more than John Michael Osbourne, when he performed…he was Ozzy. Cobain & the Clash, their music was more than a flashy, outward image to be flaunted on stage like a bad heavy metal act. The Clash's music was a code of ethic to live by, an ideology or even a religion, in the sense that punk rock was Joe's theatre of life. Theatre is the elevation of the life impulse into a sphere of primal energies. Vitality is heightened. The senses expand. Immersed in "theatre" you don't stand on stage and stare at your shoes. You stand on stage like a Shakespearean actor! You become the Ego of your music. If your music has no ego, keep it on the shelf where it belongs and spare us the agony of having to hear it.
Theatre is Jimi Hendrix, when you are without fear on stage. Theatre is Bob Marley when energy reaches beyond itself into the archetypal. Theatre is vintage Metallica, where good and evil collide. Theatre is Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden--- even Madonna, the Beatles, the Stones. Theatre does not discriminate. Theatre is being able to capture your story, your life, your destiny from a higher realm and being able to translate it into music. Those are the melodies worth hearing.
