Ali Farka Touré

Ali Ibrahim "Ali Farka" Touré (31 October 1939 – 6 March 2006) was a Malian singer and multi-instrumentalist, and one of the African continent's most internationally renowned musicians. His music blends traditional Malian music and its derivative, African American blues and is considered a pioneer of African desert blues. Touré was ranked number 76 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and number 37 on Spin magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Some years after his death, a group of musicians playing in his style performed as the Ali Farka Touré Allstars (2012), and later the Ali Farka Touré Band (formed 2014).

Blues is often denigrated for being just three chords, and tedious, but its not about the chords, but what you do within them, just like a painter who may purposely limit his palette of colors to see what he can do within that set of confines. And taking the blues from a west-coast African musician- I mean, what a concept. Look up "From Mali to Memphis" to see exactly how the music came from West Africa to be claimed as "American" music. He doesn't seem to go abroad to make American music, but to bring back elements of his musical destination and make something embued with Ry, but characteristic of its source. Thus, I would argue he didn't suggest a 3-chord blues, but it was brought to him by Ali Farka Toure. Enjoy, its good stuff.

Nice post fretman. Well articulated, and I agree completely. Not every song has to "go somewhere".  Sometimes finding a nice groove and sticking with it is all you need.
