Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV (born April 6, 1965) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He is the frontman of the alternative rock band Pixies, with whom he performs under the stage name Black Francis. Following the band's breakup in 1993, he embarked on a solo career under the name Frank Black. After releasing two albums with record label 4AD and one with American Recordings, he left the label and formed a new band, Frank Black and the Catholics. He re-adopted the name Black Francis in 2007.
His vocal style has varied from a screaming, yowling delivery as lead vocalist of Pixies to a more measured and melodic style in his solo career. His cryptic lyrics mostly explore unconventional subjects, such as surrealism, UFOs, and biblical violence, along with science fiction and surf culture. His use of atypical meter signatures, loud–quiet dynamics, and distinct preference for live-to-two-track recording during his time with the Catholics, give him a distinct style within alternative rock.

Today, I am leaving North Carolina for BurningMan. I am driving solo after two back out's by my cousin and my friend. My cousin told me last week he was not going. Over the weekend my childhood friend said he would go. This morning before we are supposed to go, he calls me and says he is not longer going. It was funny. He told me," I can take this. I did manuvears in the Sinai. Its been a long time since I've bivouac'd."

Even more odd was that before this Issac Hayes - Walk on By played. I am going to Burning man because I was married for nearly 20 years and I am now divorced. I am taking my issues and burning them in the sand. I got the last set of pics of her and put them in order. From the first set we took to the last set. You can see the procession. Anyway, its over now. When I get back it starts a new.
