The Into Temptation Songfacts reports that the song was inspired by Crowded House lead singer Neil Finn witnessing members of a rugby team and a netball team pairing up, whilst staying in a New Zealand motel.
Had you lived through it as a teenager I suspect you would feel differently.

Excellent transitions from Perez Prado - Mambo No. 5 to Khachaturian - Sabre Dance to Cloud Cult! This is not my favorite song, but the intro works well with this sequence. To me, this kind of thing is why I've listened to RP for so many years.
Truth be told, I didn't usually think much of a new Beatles album when they came out because they challenged by being different (they always won me over, however). Maybe Elbow will win me over on this one.
