I had no idea what the lyrics were until today when I was on the RP page. I just loved the sound.... and now that I know the words so much cooler, even in their brevity.
I don't get it either. And I'm sorry, that beat is far too fast for what I'd find relaxing.

All hope is not lost however — sit, close your eyes and listen to it as if it were the background music for a wonderfully relaxing vacation you're having, perhaps hangin' out by the pool at a hotel on Maui, or cruising in a yacht around Montego Bay gazing at the beautiful beach, the beautiful sunset and the beautiful people, or maybe just enjoying a picnic on a woolen blanket under the sunshine of a gorgeous Newport afternoon - sipping a dry martini that your lover just mixed up for you with a smile. Expand those horizons — the world is a big place with a million ways to experience things. Don't sell yourself short.
I have to say this one or k d lang's are the ones I loved...or at least I used to. Seems like I've heard so many versions of this song that now, each time I hear this song, even the ones from the above mentioned artists, I'm liking it less and less.
I'm sorry I just cannot get past the mind numbing electric guitar endless repeating the same jarring phrase. It sets my teeth on edge and I cannot hear anything else.
Agreed. I don't care for Pearl Jam at all and was dismayed when I saw one of their songs was about to play next. But to my surprise, I really like this song.
Indeed, I'd almost rather ram pointy objects into my ears that hear pearl jam and his mumbling, but I do like this son.
And that is one reason why I like Joan Osborne's cover even better. She adds a little spine to it. You actually get the indictment of religion ("someone is listening from a safe distance").
Yes I really like Joan Osborne's version. I'd over heard once and had to research it because it so capture me. This version just simply does nothing for me other than hope it passes soon.
Is it just me, or does that plucking sound remind anyone else of the music from Six Feet Under? Doesn't mean I don't like this song (I do!), but it just puts another level on it to me while I listen.
Is it just me and my roommates, or doesn't the end of the song imply that the girl is dying from the procedure? I've always thought that and so it was time to tell the truth—to her parents, with whom she lives.
Okay, showing my age, I thought the Burl Ives thing too. But there is just something about this song and voice that just really does in for me. So I'm in the minority, but I really do like it. The video I saw makes it even better.

I so agree! It's mind numbing to me in not a good way.
Don't feel too bad, I did the same thing!

Thanks, I was just trying to find this version. I like the looping, but it's just close to being too much, lol.

in a GOOD way...
Yes indeed! That certainly grabbed my attention. Wonderful song too.
